Woo who?

Well, we finally made it over to Woo's on Tuesday to meet his worms and to collect our tomato seedlings. Yay! Woo showed our gardeners how to set up and maintain a vermicompost box and how to harvest the castings. Castings are prized as fertilizer, either dry or soaked and made into a powerful liquid "tea".

Woo shared with us a little background on his love for worms, which began very early in his life (age 5) and revolved around a pet worm named, of course, Wormy. My favorite part of his story was the revelation that Wormy was, in fact, imaginary!

Our gardeners left Woo's the proud parents of some very interesting tomato seedlings with names like Rosalita, Amish Gold, Great White, Fourth of July and Paul Robson Black. We are expecting a very colorful tomato harvest come late summer, with Rosalita's promise of pink & white speckled fruit being the most intriguing.

Meanwhile, our seedlings planted last Thursday have sprouted and are thriving! Peas, beans, peppers, more tomatoes, and a variety of flowers are happily tucked underneath my gro-lite at home, patiently awaiting proper planting weather (ie no more frost, please!)

Yesterday our gardeners visited with their seedlings and tomatoes in the shelter of the sash house, then worked in the garden plot planning and building bamboo supports. We were able to construct support for one side of the garden, and plan to finish the other side next Tuesday.

Things are coming along quite beautifully in our garden. The students are proving themselves to be hard workers, creative contributers, and enthusiastic gardeners!

PS Ashley- your tomatoes "popped" last night. Yay! or.......Woo hooooooooooooo! :)

So much to do, so little time!

Well, we spent most of our little slice of the day crouched in the sash house, out of the wind, planting seeds. Much care was taken choosing and planting many varieties of flowers & veggies, but the labeling and diagrams really put us over the top. Have to keep them orderly, you know!

I had hoped to get everyone out into the garden to play around with the exquisite 10' long bamboo canes that have been strapped to the roof of my car for the last few days, but we ran low on time.

Next week we will be visiting Woo & his worms, and we will construct supports for our soon to sprout peas, beans, tomatoes, morning glories and cardinal climbers. Bring on the hummingbirds!

Best laid plans...

Our trip to Woo's farm has been rescheduled 'til next week. Nevertheless, we had a very productive day in the garden!

Now in residence are strawberries & rhubarb, with jeweltoned Bright Lights swiss chard alongside clusters of mesculin mix lettuce. Fabulous!

Thursday we will spend some time preparing the garden for peas & beans and we'll have a go at building supports from bamboo.

And so it begins........

Today was a nuts & bolts kind of day in the garden. We moved dirt. Not the most glamorous chore, but we did it with style and verve, and accomplished many hours work inside barely one. Near chaotic activity quickly yielded raised beds surrounding a horseshoe shaped footpath and a neat 1' border all around.

Tuesday we will choose from an intoxicating variety of tomato seedlings from Woo's farm in South Orleans,
(http://www.woosworms.com/) bring them back to Sea Call Farm, transplant, admire and generally fuss over them before ensconcing them in the restored sash house on the premises while we await suitable tomato planting weather. Strawberries and rhubarb may also be making an appearance next week.

If today's beginning is any indication, the CCLCS corner of the community garden will soon be a well-tended, thriving, eclectic, colorful, silly, abundant patch of life.
